One of my favorite yet most challenging tasks I task myself with is coming up with the most "horsey" themed goods I can come up with. I have what is likely an unhealthy relationship with glass and horses to a point that I think about it everyday. Well one such fateful day came when I was trying to design different candle holders and I came up with my favorite idea yet. I found inspiration through a Sunday afternoon at the Brooklyn Public Library near Prospect Park, they have a great art book section and I found a 50s Design book.
Seeing different shaped homewares made me think of the winning horse trophies that adorn the halls of homes and barns and how that could be a unique candelabra shape. So on I went thinking about how I was going to design this object to be made in glass as I wanted it to be silvered for the final product. This meant I had to be very strategic with how I "constructed" the object in the hotshop that would be able to be mirrored. I ended up with a complex bubble design so the piece rests on the opening of the trophy and the bowl of the cup is a recessed bowl.
I want to expand the line of these to incorporate different styles of trophies but for the first few I wanted to imitate the shorter cup shape with a taller base. I also have dreams of making Valentines Day / Mother's Day / Other Romantic Holidays special edition trophies that incorporate flowers and potentially horses.
The ultimate pieces for me to make would likely be replicas of the three triple crown trophies that include the Belmont Stakes, The Kentucky Derby, and The Preakness.
